After giving her life much thought, Tracey Dubois was convinced that she had it all figured out. She would become a rich and famous singer, dazzling audiences with unmatched vocals and lyrics written to break hearts. She was prepared to do everything in her power to make her dreams a reality, at least until she laid eyes on JP Baptiste.

Tracey decided then and there that she had to find a way to make JP hers, but she quickly realizes that her cantankerous grandmother, Ma-Me, was right when she preached, "be careful what you pray for."

Ninth Ward Blues is a coming of age story that faultlessly captures the flavor of New Orleans and the unfaltering and unconditional love that can only be found in the heart of family.

Ninth Ward Blues edition by Janelle Toussant Literature Fiction eBooks

Ninth Ward Blues tells the story of Tracey Dubois, a beautiful spirited young woman who longed to become a famous singer one day just like her daddy. A daddy’s girl true indeed. But as her mother would have it, singing outside the church was not an approval granted from her mother but instead a tale of unsuccessful attempts by Tracey to not only pursue a career in singing the blues, but finding out that singing the blues was not all that it was cracked up to be.

I loved the way Tracey Dubois relentlessly not only pursued her dreams but along the journey began to unravel her own inner blues while being a mom, holding a job and part-time singer. Sometimes in life, our own ups and downs are really our own untold stories being written right before our eyes. Tracey’s family was always there for her even when she felt they weren’t. Especially her mom and her Ma-Me who would be the one to teach her the most valuable lessons in life and love. Too often in life we neglect the most important people thinking we are actually helping the most important people.

Tracey’s story of being abandoned by her dad and her half weekend visits from her mom left her to figure out life and love all on her own along with her sister Lynette. The friendships that were formed with her girls like Val, Kenya, Tootie, and Mitra all served a purpose and brought lessons into Tracey’s life that were sometimes good and sometimes hurtful. You can’t trust all your friends. Something that Tracey had to learn the hard way.

When a father abandons his daughter, it leaves a void. A void that sends her looking and searching to fill. It’s a powerful void. Tracey thinks she found it in JP. The church hunk that every girl was after. How wrong she was. Tracey begins to date and lands a Doctor. But soon after some time Carson and Tracey both realize, this isn’t working. Tracey is still searching to fill that void. That feeling. As time passes and her relationship with Carson fizzles out, she finds what she thought was love in Jaylen. Her boss. A very married man but loves Tracey in his own way. Just not the way he should. Though torn about Jaylen’s marriage, Tracey adores this man to the point that the one who truly loves her and will forever have her back, she ignore. The complicated love triangles that she creates for herself ultimately destroys the very best love she would have. The love of a child. And the one who is there to pick up the pieces is the one you would least expect!

I loved this book and the dynamics of this storyline were powerful! I wished there was more about her dad and JP. I fell in love with Tracey’s strength, her family, her will to finally pick up the pieces and finally finding sunshine within her own blues. Excellent read!!

Ninth Ward Blues edition by Janelle Toussant Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I really enjoyed reading this book. While the ending was predictable from the beginning, it was still an interesting journey getting there. A lot of different emotions were felt while reading this. Very well written and I am looking forward to reading the next book by this author.
I spent the day reading Ninth Ward Blues. I couldn't put it down. I couldn't stop reading, but didn't want my time with Tracey to end. This missive evoked such a broad range of emotions from out-loud laughter to mournful sadness. Janelle Smith Tousant is one of our literary geniuses. I anxiously await her next books.
I got this book for free after seeing it on one of my free book alerts. I did not know the author but thought it would be something that would interest me. The book did not disappoint and I enjoyed reading it very much. The book was an easy read and I finished it very quickly. Pretty sure I only saw 1 error in the book. This coming of age story in New Orleans story is touching and I would recommend to others.
I enjoyed this book. Any book with New Orleans as the setting is a win for me. I liked that the book allowed us to understand the main character's development through childhood into adulthood. I gave it four stars because I feel like the part with her music wasn't really as developed as I had hoped it to be. The full circle theme was really interesting and I thought this was a really good read!
I never write reviews for books because I believe that people enjoy different types of books and will critique in his/her own way. HOWEVER, this book is one that was too relatable as a young, black woman with family ties and life to NOLA, especially The East and The Ninth Ward (Desire to be exact). This book made me feel as though I had grabbed a daiquiri and was sitting there listening to the ladies talk. I have laughed, cried, gotten upset, and learn to relate more to my father because of this book. I would highly recommend this book for any group of Sistas reading circle
Very good novel! I really enjoyed it & could really picture everything going on. Tracey was damaged by circumstances she had to endure and she lost focus on what was really important. Jaylen wanted to have his cake & eat it too and in the end Tracey was definitely the chick on the side while Greg waited in the wings. Truly a story of love, loss & redemption. The only problem I encountered was some editing issues but overall a wonderful story. I will definitely be looking for more from this author!
Janelle Toussant has penned a winner with Ninth Ward Blues. Readers are transported to their youth in this coming-of-age story as we travel with Tracey on her singing journey. With vivid scenes, sparkling language, and real-life situations, you'll revisit the dreams of your teen years and wonder what obstacles diverted your course. This book has awesome lessons and magnificent writing. Highly recommended!
